A Brief History of Crossbows
What are crossbows?
The term crossbow was derived from its construction. It is a bow that is mounted and fixed on a wooden stock, forming a cross. The wooden stock is created with various grooves where the bowstring is latched and to hold the arrow in place.
The Secret of the Crossbows
Crossbows has been considered to be one of the most formidable weapons used up to the Middle Ages. The use of crossbows can be traced back to about 2,000 years ago in ancient China. Chinese military have developed crossbows during the ancient times and have mastered the use of this weapon that it had been considered to be one of the reasons for many of ancient China's conquest triumphs.
What made crossbows so effective is its design. Traditional archer bows would require the user to hold it steadily in order to ensure that a straight shot will be fired to reach the target. This made it quite challenging when the archer would be on horseback or on the move, which usually happens during combat. Crossbows provided the user more stability as compared to other existing archery equipment used during this time. This made the user of crossbows to use this effectively whether stationary or on the move.
The firing mechanism of crossbows is another contributing factor to the success of the crossbow as a preferred weapon during the ancient times. Because of the fact that the crossbow used a number of mechanical functions, it is able to allow the user to stretch the bowstring farther than what can usually be done manually. This can be stretched for a longer period in time as the user lies patiently in wait for the right moment to strike. When the latch is released, it is able to launch the arrow at a speed much faster as compared to a traditional archer's bow. This increase in speed gave the arrow more power to allow it to pierce through the armor that was used during this time.
Crossbows Today
Nowadays, crossbows are mostly used for recreational purposes as compared to military use. It has become the preferred equipment used by avid hunters and sports fishers. The mechanism has become more sophisticated. It is also now manufactured using a number of different materials such as metal.
Modern Types of Crossbows
Today, there are two common types of crossbows that are manufactured and used by outdoor sports enthusiasts. The first type is the compound crossbow. This kind of crossbow uses a cable and pulley system which makes preparing the crossbow more manageable but also provides the crossbow added launching power and speed. The second type is the recursive crossbow. This kind of crossbow is highly recommended for advanced crossbow users since it would require a greater amount of skill to manipulate and handle. Since recursive crossbows can release a louder noise level as compared to the compound crossbow, this particular kind of crossbow would often come with a bowstring silencer to dampen the noise it makes.

How to Handle Crossbows Safely
All about Crossbows
Crossbows have now regained their popularity in today's modern world. However, they are no longer considered as ideal weapons for military purposes. Instead, they have now become the preferred sporting equipment used by avid hunters and fishers alike. The use of the crossbows may have greatly changed over the centuries. Nevertheless, modern-day crossbows are still manufactured and developed following the same mechanisms as they have once used in the olden times. It is for this reason that one must not be complacent when handling a crossbow for sporting use.
Here are just a few reminders to ensure that you are able to handle your crossbow safely:
Always Cock Crossbows Facing Down
Crossbows today come with a foothold that would safely allow you to cock up your crossbows. It is important to make sure that you have a firm foothold on the crossbow as you pull the bowstring back. Never, ever attempt to use your legs to hold the crossbow in place. Not only would this be relatively less stable than using the foothold. It would also open the door to a number of possible injuries.
Use Both Hands
No matter how strong you are, it is important to use both hands when cocking crossbows in place. Not only would this make it a lot easier for you to do this. It would also prevent the possibility of the bowstring from being latched in an unstable manner. When the bowstring is not properly latched to the safety mechanism of the crossbow, this could release prematurely as you are loading the arrow that you are using. This would also cause the crossbow to fire the arrow loaded prematurely, which may result to injury to you or another person. Since some crossbows would require more effort on the part of the user, the manufacturers have included a rope mechanism to aid in the process.
Use the Correct Accessories and Equipment
Crossbows vary in strength and power. It is for this reason that crossbow manufacturers have designed arrows in various weight and length. This is to make sure that you are able to use the right kind of arrows for the crossbow that you have purchased. It is extremely important to only use the right kind of arrows with the right length and weight for your crossbows. Many users may be tempted to use lighter arrows since it would definitely travel faster and as such, provide the arrow with more power. However, doing this can result to the crossbow actually splinting or even breaking crossbows. Remember that crossbows are used and held very near your face. When the wrong arrow is used and breaks, there is a very good chance that the pieces may hit you. This may result to you getting injured in the process.
The use of crossbows for hunting and fishing can provide avid hunters and fishers a whole new experience to the sport. But, just like any sport that uses a variety of equipments which require a license, safety must always come first.

What Kind of Crossbows Are Right For Me?
I'm shopping for crossbows. How can I find the right one for me?
This really depends upon what you are going to use the crossbows for. Are you going to use it for target practice, archery or hunting? The answer to that question will begin to lead you in the right direction to find the bow that is just right. When looking for crossbows bear in mind that you may need to be fitted with it, so take that into consideration when searching for one, either online or through a retail store. The needs are different when you are only target shooting as opposed to hunting or archery practice. That is why you need to know exactly what you need a crossbow for and why.
I am looking for hunting crossbows
Hunting crossbows can be registered with up to 125 lbs of pull weight, which can take down most of the animals on the planet. You also need to decide when choosing a hunting bow whether or not you want wood or steel, composite, a scope or red dot line sights, or even a cocking mechanism. Then you will need to decide upon bolts and heads for your crossbows. There are many choices available to you and you need to decide on a budget and stick with that for your hunting bow. That way, you don't overspend, and it is very easy to do just that when purchasing a bow for hunting.
How about Medieval reenactment crossbows?
When looking at crossbows for a medieval reenactment, you need to strongly consider that they are for target shooting and demonstration. These beauties will have a range of around 100 yards. These crossbows are made out of wood with a metal bow and firing mechanism. Most period pieces will be as close to historical fact as possible. They will also be a bit on the heavy side. They come with hard baked steel bows and iron tipped steel bolts and made of fine wood such as ash and cherry for example. These are a wonderful piece to have when doing a medieval reenactment and will be a fine piece to add to your bow collection.
I am using one for archery shooting
Then your search for crossbows will be easier. Archery shooting is an excellent and disciplined sport, and your bow must be able to handle all that it is asked to do for you. When hunting for an archery bow, you need to take into consideration several facts. You will need to choose a bow that is light and long. You will need to take into consideration whether or not to use a compound bow or a regular one. You need also to take measurements in order to fit the bow to you. Other considerations of course also need to be taken into consideration such as cost, draw length and draw weight. These will help you to find the right archery bow for your situation.
